After a two seasons racing time trials I decided that despite being very motivated, training using heart rate and racing to train were no longer working for me. Having read about the benefits of training with power, I wanted to find a coach who was experienced with power based training.

I started training with Richard in the Summer of 2011 and by the end of the season had taken over 3 minutes off my 25 mile time. Richard has personalised a training plan to fit around the limited time I can train and has provided extremely useful feedback from looking at my race files.

Richard is prepared to take the time to answer questions about training and as a strong time triallist himself provides very experienced feedback and advice which has really helped me.

I was introduced to Richard via a friend. We had both being looking for a coach who could help us with training with power.

It is important to find a coach you relate to and get on with if it is going to be successful.

Richard quickly understood what I was trying to achieve and got to work developing a training programme. This was made more difficult as I joined him half way through the race season. Richard has been able to adapt my training schedule to the times I have available to train.

He has been great fun to work with and made my cycling much more interesting as a result of the structure and time spent understanding my needs.

As a I normally see a huge drop off in performance towards the end of the TT season, I was impressed when we were able to keep good form right through to September with a 25 mile pb set in on a good day late in the season.

Winter training has now started and I am already getting comments about how strong I am in comparison to this time last year.  The really proof of Richards’s skills will be felt next Summer when we have worked together for 12 months. I feel confident that good results will flow from the schedule of training I am now following.

In 2010 I really focussed my time and efforts on sprint distance racing. Things took a real turn for the better when I was introduced to Richard. “What are you goals for 2011?” he asked, to which I replied, “Get a little bit quicker on the bike and if everything goes to plan, see if I can get a place on the GB Age Group squad for the ITU World Championships in Beijing.”

Well, a year on and I achieved all of my goals, thanks to Richard’s guidance and training plans! I achieved top 5 overall at Hyde Park and Blenheim, and much of this was to the fact I took literally minutes off my bike splits. A combination of very specific training plans and competitive Time Trialling (10 miles), I recorded one of the fastest bike splits at most of the triathlons I competed at on the national and local circuit.

I juggle work, training and a busy family life, and Richard listens very carefully to what I want/what I can commit to. Many of us juggle work, families and training and some of us make a complete mess of it! With Richard’s guidance and regular contact, we were able to tailor a very specific plan that factored in all aspects of our my busy life. I have no doubt he got me to the Worlds, and now we are working towards selection again for 2012.

“I have been so impressed with what Richard has done for me that I have recommended his coaching services to several of my friends. I just hope that he doesn’t do too good a job that they end up beating me!”

I’d often thought about getting a coach, but wasn’t sure whether I’d take to being told what to do with my training, & whether I’d feel under pressure to perform. After 20 years of coaching myself in the sport I decided to take the plunge.
I had heard good things about Rich’s abilities as a coach &, in October 2010, asked him if he would take me on. My fears about having a coach were soon dispelled. Rich is friendly, approachable & knows his stuff.
The structured training plan he set for me this last year was tailored to the amount of time that I have had available &, most importantly, was fun! I have enjoyed the sessions without feeling under pressure. My results this season speak for themselves:
  •  10th place in the National 10 mile TT
  • National Age Group Champion at 10 & 25 miles
  • 3 x 19 minute 10’s
  • 3 x 49 minute 25’s in the space of 4 weeks.
  • VTTA Age-Related record of 49m 03s (exactly a 2 minute improvement on my PB)
  • 1hr 45m 04s for 50 miles (over 3 minute improvement on PB)
  • 17 Open event wins out of 34 ridden
I would thoroughly recommend Rich as a coach. With his expertise I have discovered a new enthusiasm for the sport & have achieved closer to my true potential.

Thank you Rich!!
